My senior thesis project.

Mythology and the stars go hand in hand. Our planets are named after the Ancient Roman gods. Most of the constellations in our night sky are based on ancient Greek myths. But the stars have been around for longer than the ancient Romans and Greeks. And here we are, keeping the names and stories of the people who lived thousands of miles away. What are the stories the Native Americans told about the stars and the characters they made? They lived on this land before most of our ancestors, after all. Did they even have stories? My main goal with Perspective is to get others to think about something from a, well, different perspective, through the use of constellations and mythologies.

So, let us take a look up into the sky and view the stars.

This project took a little less than a year, bringing me tears, angst, sorrow, and ultimately a great amount of pride. We started talking about senior projects in fall of 2020, and worked on them until May of 2021. My project was an event and it took place in April, so that gave me about two months to put together my final presentation. Enjoy the video below!

Programs

I wanted to incorporate a star-map into my programs, so people could take them home and use them if they were interested, or even use them the night of the event. If my one semester of astronomy taught me anything, it’s that star-maps are circular. So I made circular programs. Fun fact! The three constellations that I highlighted in my talk glow in the dark.

Buttons

These were a ton of fun. I bought DIY pin buttons, designed, printed, painted (with glow-in-the-dark paint) then put them all together!
